CAT preparation tips from IIM B senior Ft. Muskan:

Understand the Exam:
  • Thoroughly familiarize yourself with the CAT format. It's a computer-based test with three sections:
    • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC),
    • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and
    • Quantitative Ability (QA).
  • Each section has 40 marks and a total time limit of 120 minutes.
Develop a Study Plan:
  • Craft a personalized study plan that caters to your strengths and weaknesses. Allocate dedicated time for each section based on your comfort level. Ideally, start early (6+ months) for comprehensive preparation.
Build a Strong Foundation:
  • Revisit and solidify your basic concepts in all three sections (VARC, DILR, QA). Use reliable study materials like textbooks, online resources, or coaching materials if needed.
Focus on VARC:
  • To excel in VARC for IIM Bangalore, prioritize reading extensively. Newspapers, articles, magazines, and business publications are excellent sources. This builds vocabulary, improves reading comprehension, and hones your ability to analyze arguments.
  • Practice Reading Comprehension (RC) passages regularly. Focus on identifying the main idea, recognizing different argument structures, and answering inference-based questions.
Sharpen Your DILR Skills:
  • Strengthen your analytical and problem-solving abilities for DILR. Practice various data interpretation techniques (tables, charts, graphs) and learn to approach logical reasoning questions strategically.
  • Solve a variety of puzzles and practice identifying patterns and trends within data sets.
Master Quantitative Ability:
  • Brush up on your foundation in mathematics (arithmetic, algebra, geometry) for the QA section. Practice solving different types of questions (percentages, averages, ratios, etc.).
  • Learn time-saving techniques and shortcuts to solve problems quickly and accurately within the limited exam time.
Practice with Mock Tests:
  • Take regular mock tests (preferably one a week initially, increasing frequency closer to the exam) to simulate the actual CAT exam experience. Analyze your performance thoroughly after each mock test.
  • Identify your weak areas, work on those concepts, and refine your test-taking strategy based on your strengths and weaknesses.
