Harvard Business School (SPNM), MBA: SP Jain Institute of Management & Research, Master of Information Technology, Virginia Tech.
Imagine a batch where your classmate is a doctor who hasn’t touched maths in 9 years, another is a Haryana Police Constable who prepared for CAT in just 2 months, and one more showed up to write the exam with a broken arm in a sling. This is IIM Ahmedabad not a story, but the reality of its 2025 - 26 batch.
At CATKing, we hosted a live guidance session with IIM Ahmedabad call converts and alumni. Two incredible people, Panellist 1, currently working at Monitor Deloitte, and Panellist 2, a current student at IIMA sat down with our students to break the silence around what MBA life at India’s most prestigious business school truly looks like.
Whether you’ve already converted your IIM Ahmedabad call and are preparing to join, or you’re a CAT 2026 aspirant looking for a reality check and motivation, this article is for you.
Who Gets Into IIM Ahmedabad?
One of the biggest myths about IIM Ahmedabad is that it’s a club for IIT engineers with 99.9+ percentile. The truth? IIMA actively seeks diversity, and the 2025 - 26 incoming batch is proof of that.
Here are some of the real profiles from this year’s converts, shared in our session:
• Dr. Jayesh Bansal (MBBS, 99.71 percentile): A practicing doctor from Calcutta Medical College who hadn’t touched maths since Class 10. Prepared for just 6 months and cracked IIMA.
• Shalu (UPSC Aspirant, Physics Honours, DU): Took a 5-year gap after graduation, cleared UPSC Prelims twice, worked as a Haryana Police Constable and Patwari and then converted IIMA with just 2 months of CAT preparation.
• Arnuv (95.01 percentile): Had a major accident 10 days before CAT, broke 4 bones in his arm, underwent surgery, was hospitalized until 5 days before the exam and still showed up and converted IIMA.
• Kunal (Lawyer, 98.9 percentile): A first-generation lawyer who was getting single-digit scores in Quant mocks. Focused on consistency and made it to IIMA.
• Karthik (99.897 percentile): Showed up to CAT after 3 Red Bulls. A study centre worker who’s caffeine-fueled but clearly dedicated.
• Akshat Sharma (Biotechnology Engineer, 98.54 percentile): Had a 55-minute IIMA interview the longest in his slot. Prepared with discipline and consistency.
• Anupriya (Political Science Graduate): Documentary and Formula 1 enthusiast who navigated stress interviews and made it.
IIM Ahmedabad doesn’t just want engineers. It wants people with interesting stories, diverse experiences, and the drive to back them up. If your background is “uncommon,” that’s not a weakness that’s your edge.

What Is Campus Life at IIM Ahmedabad Actually Like?
The first three months are intense there’s no sugarcoating that. Classes run six days a week (unlike IIM Bangalore’s four-day schedule). If you’re trying to read every case, complete all assignments independently, and perform at your peak, you’re looking at 12-13 hour workdays.
But Panellist 1 made something very clear, you can manage it. The key is prioritization. You don’t have to do everything perfectly. Attend classes, work on cases, be present and you’ll find there’s still time to breathe. The Director himself says on Day 2: “IIM Ahmedabad stands for academics.” So yes, academics come first. But the campus isn’t out to break you.
Grading System
IIMA follows a bell curve grading system. Getting an A grade (top 20%) is genuinely hard, it’s graded per subject and requires serious effort. But staying in the B category, where the majority of the batch lands, is achievable through consistent class attendance and focus.
By the third term, 80-90% of the batch has stopped reading daily cases. So if you just stay consistent when others check out, you naturally stand out. Consistency is an underrated competitive advantage at IIMA.
Professors, Infrastructure and the IMA Early Program
One thing both Panellist 1 and Panellist 2 were emphatic about are the professors at IIMA are exceptional. Not just in knowledge, but in accessibility. You can email a professor with a doubt, and they’ll give you a personal time slot. That kind of engagement is rare anywhere.
The campus infrastructure is excellent well-maintained, no waterlogging, great gym, and ample common spaces. The administration today is far more student-friendly than the horror stories from 10+ years ago.
If you’ve converted your call watch for an invite to the IMA Early Program. Approximately 300 out of 403 students are invited to join campus 15 days before regular sessions (starting June 1st). This program covers math and English fundamentals and more importantly, it’s the best time to build bonds with your batchmates before academic pressure kicks in. Join it without hesitation.
Should You Join the Placement Committee?
PlaceCom (Placement Committee) is one of the most talked-about and most misunderstood aspects of IIM Ahmedabad. Here’s the unfiltered version, as shared in our session:
What PlaceCom Actually Does
PlaceCom has about 21 - 22 members for the PGP program. These students manage company relationships sending emails, picking up recruiters from airports, arranging accommodations, running campus tours. Elections happen in late November/early December, after summer internship placements are done.
PlaceCom members handle their juniors’ summer internships and their seniors’ final placements. This natural separation minimizes conflicts of interest.
Pros of Joining PlaceCom
• A CV boost the PlaceCom tag helps with certain shortlists
• Direct relationships with company recruiters that can help your career long after graduation
• Placement Secretary and Head of PlaceCom roles can potentially bring direct shortlists from companies
Cons of Joining PlaceCom
• Extremely time-consuming academics, clubs, competitions, and social life all take a hit
• First-year grades suffer, and batchmates won’t be shy about pointing that out
• Respect in second year depends entirely on placement outcomes for juniors
• You cannot quit after the first 1-2 months without consequences
CV Preparation at IIM Ahmedabad
CV preparation and verification at IIMA begins in the second week of July and it moves fast. PlaceCom members sit with each student to verify every single CV point, and once the deadline passes, nothing changes. Panellist 1 personally rushed from Ahmedabad to Delhi to meet a CV deadline and still had to eat the cost. That’s how serious this is.
Why Your CV Directly Determines Placement Shortlists
Here’s something most incoming students don’t realize. Your academic marks are already locked in. What differentiates you in placements is how powerfully you present your experiences, achievements, and background. A well-crafted CV can get you anywhere from 2 to 10 Day 1 shortlists. That range is massive. Even if you feel like you “did nothing special,” there is a way to present your experiences that creates impact. The skill is in the writing.
Action Items for Converts
• Reach out immediately to former professors, employers, and school principals to request certificates and recommendation letters
• Compile every certificate, award, NCC participation, cultural committee involvement, and extracurricular proof you have
• Begin drafting your CV bullet points before IIMA’s official email even arrives (expected mid-May)
• IIMA sends verification emails to your references using official @iima.ac.in email IDs. No exaggeration survives this process
IIM Ahmedabad Fees, Loans & Financial Reality
One of the biggest barriers students face is the perception that IIM Ahmedabad is financially out of reach. It isn’t.
SBI provides education loans that cover tuition plus roughly ₹15,000-20,000 per month for living expenses. Repayment after graduation is very manageable Panellist 1 shared that even with an average placement CTC, he takes home approximately ₹1.5 lakh per month after taxes. Even students with lower base salaries can handle repayments comfortably.
And here’s a powerful incentive: The top 18 rankers at IIM Ahmedabad receive a complete fee waiver. It requires sleeping less than 2 hours during exams and going all out but it’s there for those who want to chase it.
CAT 2026 Preparation Strategy
1. Mock Analysis Over Mock Quantity
Taking a mock every week without analysing it is almost useless. After every mock, you need to go through every question not just the ones you got wrong. Was this correct for the right reason? Was I efficient? If it was wrong, was it a silly mistake or a concept gap? Then revise accordingly.
2. Accuracy Over Completion
Panellist 1 scored 99.99 percentile in CAT 2022 and completed only 1.5 sections. Read that again. He made a priority order, started with his strengths, and left questions deliberately. Attempting all questions is not a strategy. Leaving questions is perfectly acceptable and often smart.
3. Consistency Beats Talent
Kunal, the lawyer who converted IIMA at 98.9 percentile, was scoring single-digit marks in Quant mocks early in his prep. What got him through? Doing “one more question” every day, even when it felt pointless. Akshat showed up daily with equal weekly time for every topic. Arnuv was preparing while working full-time at a consulting firm before his accident.
None of these people had supernatural talent. They had relentless consistency.
4. Verbal Section
Panellist 1 specifically called out Verbal as a section that causes panic and can ruin your entire paper. Don’t let a tough VARC section make you abandon everything. Have a priority order within the section itself. Stay calm, move on, and trust your preparation.
5. Non-Engineers
Dr. Jayesh cracked a 99.71 percentile without touching maths since Class 10. Kunal, a lawyer, is at IIMA right now. The quant in CAT and IIMA’s curriculum is manageable with Class 10-12 mathematics if you practice consistently. Non-engineers who lack quant strength make up for it in writing, comprehension, and perspectives that engineers genuinely lack.
6. Self-Awareness Is Your Biggest Preparation Tool
Anupriya said something powerful: know exactly where you stand. Use mocks to be brutally honest with yourself about your weaknesses. Don’t let ego get in the way of fixing gaps. Students who know their weak areas and address them consistently those are the ones who convert IIMA.
Common Mistakes CAT Aspirants Must Avoid
• Taking mocks without analysing them: The mock itself doesn’t improve you. The analysis does.
• Trying to attempt every question: Panellist 1 scored 99.99 completing 1.5 sections. Quality over quantity.
• Letting a bad section derail the whole paper: Keep your composure in Verbal especially. One tough section does not mean a bad CAT.
• Lying to yourself about your weaknesses: Self-deception is the biggest preparation mistake. Use mocks to be ruthlessly honest.
• Starting interview prep before CAT: Focus entirely on CAT. Everything else comes after.
• Neglecting CV prep after converting: Many students arrive at IIMA without gathering their proof documents. Start collecting them now.
